What is the PSTN?

The Public Switched Telephone Network is often grouped under the term SCN (Switched Circuit Network).  SCN is the generic term often used to cover any network that employs circuit switching techniques (e.g. GSM Cellular, ISDN)

However, the term PSTN is most commonly associated with the analogue POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service).

Essentially the last mile from the Local Exchange to the subscriber's premises is a pair of copper wires and is referred to as the Local Loop.
