What is CATV? The Cable (Television) Network is used to provide a mixture of services to largely residential customers. There are several different and competing Cable Network technologies that provide Audio/Video content, Voice (POTS) and Data (Internet) services - although with varying success. The subscriber terminal may be called either a Set-Top Box (STB) or a Media Terminal Adapter (MTA) depending upon the technology and services provided. Each of these contain a Cable Modem (CM) to permit connection to the HFC network. European Networks have predominantly utilised DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) technology whereas other regions have adopted MCNS (Multimedia Cable Network System) or DOCSIS. Euro-DOCSIS is the regional variation standardized for Europe and both DOCSIS/Euro-DOCSIS really only specify the link between the subsriber terminal and the headend router.
